ABOUT ME

REES STORM

EDITOR, INSTRUCTOR, COACH

Four decades plus career as editor, instructor, coach, mentor, advisor for people of all backgrounds, ages, and English language skill levels.

The making of an editor

I realized I had a unique set of skills while in the Peace Corps in Mexico. I was reviewing an article brought to me by a physics professor. The journal editor returned the article with harsh critique from one of the peer reviewers. Because the reviewer’s criticism was about language usage, not about content, I could help. Some English language smoothing, the alteration of a few terms, and the paper was published! Success!

Indeed, every journal article I have ever edited has been published! Moreover, in 2022, an article I edited was awarded top prize—Best 2022 Paper in Planning and Entrepreneurship Building an Inclusive Ecosystem for Minority and Women Entrepreneurs by Yas Motoyama, Henry Golatt & Harley Etienne (PDF) by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning.

A little more about me

I was born and lived in the US for most of my life. From 2016–18, I had the chance to serve as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mexico. Now I live part of the year in Guanajuato City, GTO, Mexico and the other part in Procter, BC, Canada. I love yoga, hiking, reading, and traveling. Since editing is work I can take with me anywhere, I feel very lucky to do what I love wherever I happen to be!

Contact

Trained, Professional and Current

Clients appreciate my training and professionalism.

In 2021, I completed a year-long copyediting certificate program, and I belong to top-ranked editing associations—EFA, NWEG, and ACES. Clients know that I am up-to-date with editing trends and technologies. A fiction client benefited by me staying current when I shared best practices with them about handling a bilingual character’s dialogue and inner thoughts without “exoticizing” or “othering” either language.

I am also a co-founder and leader of the Academic Editing Chapter, a collaboration between the EFA and Editors Canada which is the first organization in North America that specifically supports academic editing professionals.

Passionate, interdisciplinary, and adaptable

I am passionate about editing. I specialize in academic editing and in multilingual clients. Because my emphasis is English language usage, I work within many academic fields, including STEM, the humanities, the social sciences, medicine and allied health. I also work on creative nonfiction and fiction projects. I most frequently use Chicago Style and APA. But when editing journal articles, I follow the journal’s style guide. I edit using US and UK English style and standards.

Your voice. Your message.

Author voice and message are what distinguishes and connects my clients from others in their field. My goal as an editor is to serve as a proxy reader, ensuring that the author’s voice is preserved and that message is clear. Online translators are great, but having a human editor check for language smoothness makes basic sense.

Happy clients

My clients return because I help them get published, I am conscientious, and I meet deadlines!
